Few London landmarks are as instantly recognisable as the zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios. On 8 August 1969, four musicians walked across it and created one of the most famous album covers in music history.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr’s seemingly ordinary stroll was photographed by Iain Macmillan in just a handful of minutes. The resulting image became the cover of Abbey Road, turning an unassuming North London street into a must-visit destination for Beatles fans from around the world.

Today, visitors still queue to recreate the iconic crossing. The experience is wonderfully simple: wait for a gap in the traffic, step onto the stripes and strike your best Beatles pose. Just remember that it is a working road, not a pedestrian attraction, so safety comes first!

There is also a charming anecdote behind the photograph. Macmillan had been given only about ten minutes to take the shot, while the Beatles were keen to get back to the studio. With the photographer standing in the middle of the road, traffic was briefly stopped and the band made several crossings. The famous image was therefore less the result of elaborate planning than a very successful bit of London improvisation.

After your crossing, head to the nearby Abbey Road Studios and visit the famous graffiti-covered wall, where generations of fans have left their messages. Whether you are a lifelong Beatles devotee or simply looking for one of London’s most memorable photo opportunities, Abbey Road offers a chance to step briefly into music history.
