Standing proudly on Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is one of London’s must-visit attractions, home to more than 2,300 masterpieces spanning over 700 years of European art. Best of all, general admission is free, making it an easy addition to any city itinerary.
The Gallery first opened its doors in 1824 with a modest collection of just 38 paintings purchased from a private banker. Today, visitors can admire works by legendary artists including Van Gogh, Monet, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Turner, all under one spectacular roof.
One of the Gallery’s most remarkable stories comes from the Second World War. To protect the priceless collection from bombing raids, nearly all the paintings were secretly moved to a slate mine in North Wales. The empty gallery didn’t stay silent for long, however. Renowned pianist Myra Hess organised free lunchtime concerts, lifting the spirits of Londoners throughout the Blitz. More than 750 concerts were held, proving that even during the darkest days, art and music could bring hope.
For a lighter tale, keep an eye out for Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. It’s one of the Gallery’s biggest stars, and visitors often joke that it’s the hardest painting to photograph, not because it’s hidden, but because there’s almost always a crowd of people trying to take the perfect selfie with it!
