One of the cathedral’s more amusing stories comes from the Whispering Gallery. Thanks to its remarkable acoustics, a whisper spoken against one side of the circular wall can be heard clearly on the opposite side, over 30 metres away. Visitors have long used it to share secrets or surprise unsuspecting friends. Legend has it that Victorian gentlemen occasionally used the gallery to discreetly pass messages across the dome, much to the confusion of everyone standing in between!
