A British heroine in every sense of the word and rightly deserving a place near Trafalgar Square facing the National Portrait Gallery. Edith Cavell was a British nurse stationed in Belgium during WW1 and was responsible for not only saving lives from both sides of the conflict, but also helping Allied soldiers escape from German occupied territory. She was captured by the Germans, tried and executed by firing squad, despite worldwide outrage. The night before her execution she said: “Patriotism is not enough, I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone” and these words are inscribed on the memorial.
